The Green Jean Foundation, a pioneering force in agricultural education, was recently featured in Central Florida Ag News for its significant contributions to the agricultural community. Founded in 2021 by Matt Palmer, the foundation is dedicated to enhancing agricultural education and providing valuable resources to schools and growers.
“Our mission is to cultivate agricultural excellence through education,” says Matt Palmer, founder and President of the Green Jean Foundation. With over 20 years of experience in Florida agriculture, Palmer recognized the need for better educational resources and practical solutions for growers. This led to the creation of the Green Jean Foundation, which focuses on expanding agricultural curricula in K-12 programs and supporting the agricultural community.
Palmer’s journey began with his company, Soil and Water Ag Tech, which aimed to reduce groundwater consumption and nutrient migration. His success in implementing subsurface irrigation systems resulted in significant reductions in groundwater use and nutrient migration, inspiring him to address broader agricultural challenges and encourage younger generations to enter the field.
The foundation’s name was inspired by Mr. Green Jeans, a character from the show Captain Kangaroo, who was one of the first to talk about agriculture to Palmer’s generation. The Green Jean Foundation has received enthusiastic support from the agricultural community and has already achieved significant milestones, including funding partnerships and educational initiatives in schools.
One of the foundation’s notable achievements is the development of scalable aquaculture systems for educational purposes, which are being integrated into school curricula. “We are proud to be working with schools to teach students about aquaculture and provide them with hands-on learning experiences,” Palmer explains.
Palmer emphasizes the importance of the community’s support and the contributions of individuals who helped establish the foundation. “This foundation is a testament to the selflessness and dedication of the agricultural community. Together, we are building something that will have a lasting impact,” he adds.
